Around 40 percent of adults aged 65 and over will report some kind of memory loss. New insights into the workings of the brain help with early detection of cognitive impairment. The learning and memory “hub” of the brain is known as the hippocampus, and includes the surrounding region, the lateral entorhinal cortex (LEC) and medial entorhinal cortex (MEC). The LEC feeds memories into the memory hub and serves as a more specific time marker for memories.

Several recent studies in humans have pinpointed the LEC/MEC as the starting point for the onset for memory loss and Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Early symptoms include losing track of the passage of time and dates, becoming disoriented, difficulty paying bills on time, and a weakening of the sense of smell. This may be a result of aging, medical conditions like hypothyroidism and inflammation, or early onset of AD.
